Become an agent for change for environmental issues we face locally and globally.
The resource extraction heritage of North-Eastern Ontario provides a unique opportunity to examine industrial impacts on the environment.
Yet at the same time the outcome of policies and practices aimed at remediating the environment can be studied. One of the principle objectives of the program is to have students think about incorporating transformative environmental change in both their own lives and those around them. Examining the environment through the lens of transformative change requires an evaluation of values, commitment and practices.

Students will benefit from melding academic approaches and understanding with current and unfolding real world issues. This is done by identifying, examining and analyzing human/environmental issues around such things as, but not limited to, the Alberta Tar Sands, natural resource extraction, and climate change as they may impact ecosystem and human health. Students will also gain hands on field experience through a field work course and, perhaps, a fourth year thesis.
Other possibilities at other institutions include: environmental studies/sciences, sustainable development, geography, etc. Environmental issues are in the news every day. It is important that citizens can apply a critical lens in understanding these issues and are able to relate them to their lifestyles and that of society at large. To do this, citizens need to be equipped with knowledge of the theories, concepts and terms in order to understand the complex relationships between the natural and human systems. Students who excel and enjoy the Environmental studies at LU will recognize the importance of understanding environmental issues from a variety of perspectives including philosophy, law, history and indigenous studies. Students will, as a result, become agents of change for environmental challenges that they will encounter during their lives.
