The Hellenistic World-From Alexander The Great to Cleopatra VII
This course is a survey of the political, social and cultural history of the Greek world from Alexander the Great to the death of Cleopatra VII. The emergence and development of the Hellenistic kingdoms, the role of the monarch, and the survival of democracy in the Greek city-state are examined in detail. Other topics include the interaction between the Greek and native populations, the increasing influence of women in their communities as well as the influence of Hellenistic culture on religion, literature and visual arts.
