Religion and Violence

This course examines the relationship between violence and religious thought, institutions, and practices in various religious traditions, both Western (Judaism, Christianity, Islam) and Eastern (Hinduism, Buddhism). Attention is given to manifestations of both religious violence (e.g. holy war, sacrifice) and the religious repudiation of violence (e.g. pacifism, non-violent resistance). After considering the necessary historical and theoretical background, the course focuses on the contemporary global significance of religious violence/non-violence. (T) (lec 3) cr 3.
